JESUS JAM
Every year, I have the immense pleasure of shooting an amazing event called "Jesus Jam". For those who aren't religious, I think you could still appreciate the beauty of this night...an event made specifically to honor and celebrate people with disabilities. It happened last Friday night and many of the attendees are already counting down the days until it happens again next year...that's how much they love it.
And this is why it's called Jesus Jam. Not bc any specific belief is being shoved onto anyone, but bc Jesus called people to put the "last" as guests of honor. To show them that they are important.
At this event- this massive, fantastic, dance-crazy (80s themed) party- that's how these sweet special needs folks are made to feel. Like truly loved and appreciated guests of honor.
The night begins with a hallway of people cheering, clapping, high-fiving- welcoming the guests to the event.
After the grand entrance, each guest is paired with a "buddy", a new friend who will hang out with them for the duration of the night- serving them dinner, dancing, playing games, and talking.
Here's more shots of the night. Live in the area? Keep an ear out for the volunteer call next spring. The party wouldn't work with the hundreds of people that pour their time and hearts into it.
This is my buddy Jake (aka Jake "J-Thrill" Bennett), one of the most faithful volunteers for this event every year. Turns out he is both "phat" and "fresh". Now I know.
This fella is one that most Joplin residents can recognize instantly- dubbed by some as Dancing Danny. Danny is constantly jamming, and when I say constantly I mean EVERY TIME I've EVER seen him. Whether it's karaoke at vintage stock, Guitar hero at home, dancing while advertising on street corners for local businesses, or just beating a drum in the middle of town with a big ol set of headphones on, Danny doesn't stop.
I've never seen so much joy in Danny's face as I did when "eye of the tiger" came on during the dance and he began air boxing to the beat. It was like he'd found home.
pictured below is my buddy Bryce. I've photographed him in a variety of settings now- headshots, events, etc- and we have an ongoing hashtag called #bryceeats. I think you can see why.
